The responsible development of property assets is at the core of our operations.

As a property owner, SYK’s responsibility is centered around developing properties in line with the principles of sustainable development. We are responsible for providing our customers with appropriate and healthy operating premises. Our aim is to ensure the long-term sustainability of our properties from the human, environmental and economic perspectives.

Only buildings that are used can generate added value for society, which makes them worth the investments made in their construction and maintenance. Accordingly, developing the attractiveness of our campuses is also significant from the perspective of responsibility. We want our campuses to be attractive and extensively integrated parts of vibrant cities.

We invest strongly in development, particularly in the development of learning environments. We want to help ensure that people have the opportunity for lifelong learning, which is essential for the success of society in our rapidly changing world. Our aim is that everyone who visits our campuses can enjoy positive experiences in our buildings in both a professional and a personal sense; for example, new experiences in the shape of art, new spatial concepts or new kinds of learning environments.

Increasing spatial efficiency is responsible in an economic as well as environmental perspective. At the same time, we recognise that learning is a social situation. We often utilise premises that are not fully used by transforming them into group workspaces that support collaborative learning.

We are responsible for providing our customers with appropriate and healthy operating premises.

Cooperation with partners

We are a small expert organisation whose operations are based on reliable partnerships. Our partner network consists of hundreds of partners, the most significant of which include universities, construction companies, property maintenance companies, consulting companies, funding providers, expert organisations and in property leasing.

Before starting new projects we ensure that our new partners operate responsibly. The assessment emphasises economic and environmental responsibility. We ensure that our partners pay their taxes and employer contributions and that they do not cause environmental risks.

We expanded our partner network to new business areas in 2016, such as turnkey rental solutions. We also deepened our cooperation with our existing partners.

We develop our industry by making significant investments in research, development and innovation activities that help take the property and construction industry forward. We also promote a culture of experimentation through demo project programmes implemented in partnership with universities each year.

Reporting on responsibility

We have strengthened the principles of sustainable development in our operations since 2011, practically throughout our company’s existence. We have developed systematic responsibility reporting since 2013.

The aim of our reporting is to promote the openness and transparency of our operations, to provide increased opportunities for comparisons within the industry and to enable appropriate monitoring of the aspects that are reported on. A further goal is to identify aspects of our operations that our stakeholders have a special interest in, through which we can strengthen our positive impacts on the surrounding society, economy and environment.

We also carry out comparisons with corresponding reports by other operators in the property sector and interact with them to jointly develop responsibility within the industry.

We also participate in the discussion on responsibility in our industry together with our stakeholders. We are also interested in new reporting models. In 2017, we intend to familiarise ourselves with, for example, the Finnish corporate responsibility reporting recommendations developed jointly by KTI Property Information, the Finnish Association of Building Owners and Construction Clients (RAKLI). In future, we intend to participate in the activities of the FIBS corporate responsibility network with the aim of obtaining the latest information on developing responsibility in business operations.
